Boy meaning smaller but also self aware individual.
As far as I know the first ''boy'' mecha that I'm aware of was automaton Titan Boy from Flashman and he was hugely popular for many many years. So much that the word ''boy'' was adopted to name those smaller automata mechas.
There was also Tetra Boy in Choujin Sentai Jetman and even The Warrior Wheel was called Tackle Boy in Ohranger.
