Pywaket Pilot: Just a note - the reason that 100LL is dyed blue is so that when you sump the tanks on your airplane, you can tell if there's water in the fuel. The fuel is less dense, so it will float on top of any water. If you see clear liquid at the bottom of the sump cup, you know you have water in the tanks. This isn't uncommon - it can happen if the tanks aren't completely full, and the temperature drops - the air in the tank has water that will condense and sink to the bottom of the tank. Also, sometimes tank caps aren't completely watertight, so heavy rainstorms can cause water to end up in the tank. Basically, you just keep drawing samples off the bottom until you get nothing but pure blue in the cup. An airplane will have several sump points: one at the lowest point of each tank, and then one where the lines all connect (in a device called the gascolator). You take samples starting at the highest sump points, working your way down. Each airplane will have a specific sequence, spelled out in detail in the Pilot's Operating Handbook, something you are required to have on board at all times. This is SOP as part of the preflight checklist, and is also done whenever the airplane is refuelled (in case the fuel truck, or stationary fuel tank has water of its own).
